Brother CS7000X: threading, bobbin, tension and error codes

How to thread the CS7000X, load the bobbin, clean the bobbin area and clear the E error codes. Brother says not to oil it.

Is this your machine?

The Brother CS7000X is a computerized machine with 70 built-in stitches, seven one-step buttonholes, an LCD screen, stitch selection keys and a Start/Stop button, sold with a wide extension table. Brother prints the product code on the rating plate; the operation manual Brother lists for the CS7000X covers product codes 888-N00, N02, N20, N22, N40, N42 and N60, and some features in it are marked as found only on certain models.

Because it is computerized, the owner's part of maintenance is short: thread it correctly, use the right bobbin and needle, keep lint out of the race, and read the error code when it beeps. What happens behind the covers is a job for Brother's service centers.

Needles and bobbins that fit

Brother specifies home sewing machine needles in sizes 65/9 to 100/16, with thread from weight 30 to 90. Never use weight 20 or heavier thread. The only place Brother names a needle system for this machine is its Sewing Guide, which calls for a 130/705H 100/16 wing needle for heirloom stitching.

  • Lightweight fabrics: 65/9 to 75/11.
  • Medium fabrics: 75/11 to 90/14.
  • Heavyweight fabrics: 90/14 to 100/16.
  • Stretch fabrics: ball point needle, 75/11 to 90/14. Brother's ball point needle is gold colored, part XD0360-021 (90/14).

The machine shipped with needle set XC8834-021 (one each of 75/11, 90/14 and 100/16). Brother suggests a new needle after each project or after three full bobbins of thread. Put it in with the flat side toward the back, pushed up until it touches the stopper.

The bobbin is the Brother SA156 (XA5539-151 outside the Americas), 11.5 mm (7/16 inch) tall. Brother's manual: "SA156 is Class 15 type bobbin." The bobbin case on the machine is Brother part XF5707-101; for a replacement Brother sends you to an authorized service center.

Threading the top thread

The CS7000X upper path, simplified. Follow the numbers printed beside the channel on the machine itself.
  1. Raise the presser foot lever. This opens the tension discs.

  2. Raise the needle to its highest position with the Needle position button, or by turning the handwheel toward you until the mark points up. Then turn the machine off.

  3. Pull the spool pin up as far as it goes and put the spool on it.
Thread from the spool to the first guide
  4. Take the thread through the channel along the numbered path printed on the machine: from the top guide, down the right-hand channel, around the bottom, up through the take-up lever, and back down.
Thread hooked through the take-up lever at its highest point
  5. Slide the thread behind the needle bar thread guide above the needle.
  6. Thread the needle front to back, or use the built-in needle threader, and pull about 10 cm (4 inches) of thread under the presser foot toward the back. The threader works only with needles 75/11 to 100/16. It will not work with a 65/9, twin or wing needle, or with decorative threads.

Winding and dropping in the bobbin

  1. Put the spool on the spool pin. Take the thread under the thread guide and around the pretension disk.
  2. Thread it through a hole in the bobbin and set the bobbin on the winder shaft so the notch fits over the projection. Slide the shaft to the right.
  3. Turn the machine on. Hold the thread end and run a few turns, then stop and trim the tail. If your winder seat has a slit cutter, wind five or six turns by hand and cut the tail in the slit before winding. Brother warns an uncut tail can tangle or bend the needle near the end of the bobbin.
  4. Wind until the bobbin is full and turning slowly. Use the speed slider to wind slowly for stretchy nylon thread. Cut the thread, slide the shaft left and remove the bobbin.

If thread ever tangles under the winder seat, do not take the seat or its screw off. Wind the tangle off clockwise from under the seat.

  1. Turn the machine off. Raise the needle and the presser foot and open the bobbin cover.
Plug pulled from the wall outlet
  2. Drop the bobbin in so the thread unwinds to the left: seen from above, the bobbin turns counterclockwise as you pull the thread. Keep it the same way up it was on the winder; the small mark on one face of Brother bobbins helps.

  3. Hold the bobbin down with a finger, pass the thread through the slit, and pull it to cut it on the cutter. With the quick-set bobbin you can start sewing without drawing the bobbin thread up.

Top and bobbin tension

Top tension is set by hand on the thread tension dial. Turn it counterclockwise to loosen and clockwise to tighten. Brother's reset point is 4: whenever stitches look wrong, return the dial to 4 and rethread before changing anything else.

  • Bobbin thread showing on the top, or loops on the right side of the fabric: the top is too tight. Loosen it.
  • Loops on the wrong side: the top is too loose. Tighten it.
  • A dead straight top thread with the bobbin thread pulled up to the surface, and the dial makes no difference: the bobbin thread is not through the slit and under the case's tension spring. Reinsert the bobbin.

Brother gives no procedure for adjusting bobbin tension on this machine.

Cleaning the bobbin race (do not oil it)

Unplug the machine first. Turn the power switch off and pull the plug before you clean, change the needle, take off the needle plate or oil anything.

Brother's manual says the CS7000X must not be oiled by the user; it is oiled at the factory and periodic oiling is unnecessary. Do not oil the bobbin case. A handwheel that turns hard or a new noise means a service center visit.

  1. Turn the machine off and unplug it. Raise the needle and remove the presser foot.
Plug pulled from the wall outlet
  2. Remove the needle and the presser foot holder.
  3. Loosen the two needle plate screws with the L-shaped screwdriver (part XG0918-001) and lift the needle plate off.
  4. Lift out the bobbin case.
  5. Brush lint and dust out of the race and the area around it with the cleaning brush (part X59476-051), or a vacuum with a mini attachment. Brother does not recommend canned compressed air.
Brushing lint from the feed dogs and hook area
  6. Put the bobbin case back with its alignment marks lined up, refit the needle plate and tighten the screws.

Wipe the outside with a soft cloth. Brother says not to use thinner, petroleum ether, alcohol, sprays or ammonia cleaners on the machine.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Paraphrased from the troubleshooting section of Brother's CS7000X operation manual.
What you seeCheck, in this order
Thread tangled on the underside, a rattle, then the machine stopsThe top thread is misthreaded and cannot be pulled up, so it balls up in the bobbin case. Cut the tangle free, pull out the top thread and rethread it with the presser foot raised. Reinsert the bobbin if you took it out.
Skipped stitchesRethread the top. Replace a turned, bent or dull needle. Match needle and thread to the fabric, with a ball point needle for knits. Reinsert the bobbin.
Top thread breaksRethread, checking the spool and the channel. Look for knots. Loosen the tension. Clear any tangle in the bobbin case. Fit a correctly sized needle, flat side back. Scratches at the needle plate hole or bobbin case need a dealer.
Bobbin thread tangles or breaksRewind the bobbin. Replace a scratched bobbin. Use SA156 bobbins only, inserted counterclockwise.
Bobbin thread cannot be pulled upRethread the top and reinsert the bobbin.
Fabric does not feedRaise the feed dogs with the feed dog position switch. Lengthen a very short stitch. Clear thread from the bobbin case.
Handwheel stiffThread is tangled in the bobbin case. Remove the needle plate and bobbin case and clear it.
Needle breaksSeat the needle fully and tighten the clamp. Replace bent needles. Use the right foot. Do not push or pull the fabric.

Error codes you can clear yourself

E6The motor locked on tangled thread. Turn off and clear the tangle.
E7A single-needle stitch is selected in twin needle mode. Choose a twin-needle stitch.
F1 to F9A possible malfunction. Brother sends these to an authorized dealer or service center.

The machine beeps for four seconds and stops if it locks up, usually on tangled thread.

Leave these to a technician

The circuit board, power supply, motor, sewing light unit and anything that shows an F code. Brother says a damaged light unit must be replaced by an authorized dealer. This site does not cover opening a computerized machine's electronics.

Stop if the wiring is cracked. Look along the power cord, the foot control cord and where they enter the machine and the pedal. If the insulation is cracked, crumbling, brittle or shows bare wire, unplug the machine and do not use it until a sewing machine technician has rewired it. This site does not cover cord, motor or pedal repair.
